TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

"We live and we die, this is the truth that we can only face alone. No one can help us, not even the Buddha. So consider carefully, what prevents you from living the way you want to live your life."  ~  Dalai Lama XIV

"As much as we try, we do not control how we feel and what we think. Efforts to do so are uniformly frustrating as we struggle against unwanted thoughts and emotions that only exacerbate them."  ~  Gordon Livingston

The secret, and of course this is the hard part, is to face our unwanted thoughts and emotions and then accept them. Hard as this may seem, it is the way out.

"Gratitude, not understanding, is the secret to joy and equanimity."  ~  Anne Lamott

"Gratitude opens the heart. Loving kindness fills it."  ~  Maltese Hickey

Credit for that last quote goes to Marese Hickey, not Maltese Hickey. Autocorrect strikes again.

"Sometimes you need to sit lonely on the floor in a quiet room in order to hear your own voice and not let in drown in the noise of others."  ~  Charlotte Eriksson

One of the reasons I like these quotes that I find and post is that they lead me to discover truly interesting people that I may not have ever encountered otherwise.

"The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook."  ~  William James

"Patience is a form of wisdom. It demonstrates that we understand and accept the fact that sometimes things must unfurl in their own time."  ~  Jon Kabat-Zinn

Today's affirmation: Rather than searching for the right person, I will be the right person.
