TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

Situations change. Attempting to rebuff such changes will drain the vitality they bring. A formula for misery.

"Life is like improvised jazz. We cannot regulate all the variables. We must play it with panache and flair as best we can."  ~  Haemin Sunim

"Once every hour today, tune into your breath for a few moments & pay attention to the little pleasures of daily life."  ~  Danny Penman

"The greatest thing is, at any moment, to be willing to give up who we are in order to become all that we can be."  ~  Max De Pree

"We must be willing to give up the life we have planned, so as to accept the life that is waiting for us."  ~  Joseph Campbell

"The pressure you put on yourself to succeed often blocks the desired outcome of those very achievements: a sense of contentment. Cut out the middleman and try to feel content amidst all your striving and planning."  ~  Daily Zen

Here's one that sounded good on a first read, but left me feeling a bit uneasy until I gave it more thought. The problem here is that this promotes contentment as one of those primary goals to strive for. I do not feel comfortable focusing on trying to feel content when I am not. That becomes just another attachment that I need to let go. The focus should be entirely on what I am engaged with in the moment. If it is meant to be, contentment will arrive on its own schedule.

Reality is like an inkblot test. It is what it is. You have to make something of it. What you make tells the world a lot about yourself.

"What we call 'I' is just a swinging door, which moves when we inhale and when we exhale. It moves that is all."  ~  Shunryu Suzuki

No wonder why I sometimes have so much trouble making and keeping a decision.

"Everyone is a mirror image of yourself - your own thinking coming back to you."  ~  Byron Katie

I'm not sure this is 100% true, at least for people who are more mindful of others than themselves. But it is frightening to think of the extent that we do mindlessly project our own incomplete understandings onto others. We can't know their fears and joys, they are putting on a front, same as we are. So we misread them and substitute ourselves. Karma
