Senate passes measure to allow gun transport on Amtrak

Leave it to some goober, Republican Senator to push for carrying guns on an Amtrak train or lose Federal subsidies. Haven't we seen enough with these Militia-type morons showing up at Obama town-hall meetings with guns strapped to their hips? Guns may have a place in rural America but allowing them to be carried in increasingly more places is bound to encourage people to return to settling disputes with guns. Does anyone remember the Old West was civilized by forbidding guns within the town limits? I don't get this macho obsession with walking around with a gun strapped to your waist. People who do this often insist it is for defensive purposes but I think they are just insecure people who wear the gun as an act of intimidation. Seriously, do you really think if the Federal government became, as you fear, oppressive, your side arm would be any match for the military weaponry of the army? Give me a f**king break! Maybe you think wearing a gun makes you a chick magnet? It just makes you look like Mr. October in the 2009 Mr. Militia calendar. Militia types, take my word for it, chicks are not impressed by men wearing guns. Try things more likely to bring you chick success, like grooming and good conversation.

If you don't I may have to call Wyatt Earp to come and shoot you down in the street. Besides, it's not fair to make it legal to carry a gun on a train and keep it illegal to shoot the guy next to me yelling on his cell phone for an hour.

Good, I'm happy you don't think I attacked you Arthur....I don't believe in gun control. I just hope more people don't start taking to the streets with them...Too many crazies out there. I understand many are not, but how do you know who is who? I personally think sophisticated weaponry (I include guns in that, not pencils) will be the eventual ruin, end of mankind, so I refuse for my conscience to play a part in it. I have a video....Seeds of Change... on my page...... It speaks to me.

Ok... ...excuse me!..I had to read this 3 times before I even understood you think I attacked you. I made a point about fear because I learned through deep soul searching how fear is such a great motivator of people. WE are afraid it makes us look little if we say...Yeah dang it..I'm afraid of what could be around the corner..... Maybe, if we understood how fear motivates us we can begin to make positive changes. This is serious to me..I truly believe ( at least I used to) we could live in peace. I am scared about the kind of world we will be leaving to our children. If attacking you is the reason for me joining this post....I'll be damned.....

I feel a low simmer going on in our society. Like a dormant volcano slightly rumbling under the earth. Things are fine now....Yes...I just wonder if we are not opening up Pandoras box ......Not all people are ccw holders and even those people in turmoil may not act as the smart people you say they are. There are those who cant wait for a chance to be some kind of hero or to even commit a crime under cover...... Remember the LA/watts riots? I had to bus near there. When we were given the OK to go out on the streets, I had to walk them . It was eerie to say the least...I just wonder, and with good cause...

We live in a fear based world...why else would people need to walk around with guns? If you feel you need protection when you walk out the door..THAT IS FEAR. There are also those who are just waiting for the right opportunity to use those guns...Just hope it isn't me or my family they use them on. The thought is frightening. How can a person possibly know a persons evil intentions unless they tell someone about them? Jeez...There is no way to tell who the mature and wise gun carriers are. All we can do is hope for the best with a armed society. If major riots break out there will be many dead and people wont even be able to go to the market without being afraid. I opt for no guns and a belly full instead of a bloody mess and no food.....Whats sad is it is already to late...The ball is in motion so.... Annie get your gun.

Well said, Arthur, well said.

I see this as a non-issue. Allowing Amtrak passengers to carry guns in checked baggage as long as they declare them--as airline passengers are allowed to do--seems pretty reasonable. eg. you are going on a pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota, and don't , won't , can't fly, you can now declare your shotgun, check it in and have it with you when you get there. Whats the big deal?

Getagroove, one more friendly point: you say "I just don't like gun-enthusiasts repeating NRA talking points to me when I write about my feelings around this issue."

If you don't like people disagreeing with your "feelings" by bringing FACTS to the table, I suggest blogging about something less seminal, say Brad and Angelina or American Idol or what "work" Sharon Osbourne has or hasn't had done. Otherwise, if you can't run with the big dogs, get off of the porch.

Getagroove, thank you for clarifying that you are a comedian. That detail had previously escaped my notice. You say there are many other societies around the world "more civilized than ours" (your words, not mine) where no one is armed except law enforcement. You are correct. The correct term for such societies is Police State.
It's no secret that every tyrant in history who has ever risen to power had to first dis-arm the people. Hitler did it, Stalin did it, Castro did it, Kim Il-Un Yung Moon (or whatever his name is - pardon my inferior education here) did it. Peace activist Mathatma Ghandi commented on it when the British did it in India:
'Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest.'
I suppose you disagree with Ghandi as well.

Sorry, Arthur, my irritation was not aimed at you. Your response was thoughtful. My remarks were aimed at the person who said I would somehow not have the moral fitness to go through a CCW permit process and walk around without shooting somebody. First of all, I am a comedian, so my blogs are intended to tease, entertain, and express my point-of-view. I make a statement in my profile advising all who read my blogs to keep that in mind. I just don't like gun-enthusiasts repeating NRA talking points to me when I write about my feelings around this issue.

You're all paranoid. Neither I nor any of my friends have ever had to confront someone carrying a gun in our entire lives. The chances that any of you will are extremely small. You may think it's insulting that I suggest you will be more likely to settle a dispute using your gun but I have only look around me, noting how civility has broken down in society, and know that a confrontation will more likely escalate to a gun battle if both parties are armed. Keep one in your home if you must and take the consequences if your children accidentally shoot themselves, or you mistake someone on your property as a threat. If you live in a rural area and need one to protect against predators, fine, but this bull shit about everyone needing to walk around armed is insane. The Second Amendment, which you folks love to quote, made sense when America was unexplored, mostly rural, and everyone was expected to respond to a call for militia. An armed society is not a civil society, it is an intimidated society. That's not the same as civility. We are seeing people wearing guns strapped to their hips at political and town hall forums now. Thanks a lot, folks. It's just a matter of time before emotions get the better of someone and starts shooting.

BTW, who the hell are you to question my morals? Do you think you are morally superior because you went through a firearms training course? Where did you get that distorted idea? You do everything in your power to make access to guns easier, fighting any and all attempts at regulation as some sort of mass conspiracy by the government to deny you your rights, then you claim the need to carry a gun to protect you for a situation created by your own actions? There are many other societies around the world more civilized than ours where no one is armed except law enforcement. Civilization does not require guns. Quite the opposite. These countries have crime rates far lower than ours so your theory doesn't hold water. Why don't you just admit that you feel tough when you wear a gun?
