JayLee recently started a discussion about travel over in the Forum. "Hit The Road".
It reminded me of some of my travels in the past. Probably wouldn't fit in the "Hit the Road Thread", so I'll put it here.
When I was in High School and College, there was a drive in, in my home town Named Smiley's Drive in. It was on a corner located at the town's major innersection.
Smiley was part of the local color. He had served time in "Moundsville" (The State Prison) for…Continue
OK, guess I used up all the pixels on 33 so will continue here.
Pictures at the campground in Meridan, MS.
Just one of the many unusual things that We come across in our travels.
Vicksburg, MS. This pic is of the…Continue
At the end of my last installment we were asphalt camping in the Flying "J" parking lot at Cattletsburg, KY.
From there we motored on down to the Escapee Park at Raccoon Valley near Knoxville, TN. The leaves were turning and it was a very colorful trip. Unfortunately, it is not advisable to take pictures while driving a 22,000 Lb. RV pulling a car. So you will just have to use your imagination.…Continue
Yep! That's the hayfield on my West Virginia farm. Where Happy the Goldendoodle and I spent the last couple months.
However it has been nowhere as dry as the above picture. It rained 3 or 4 days every week during Sept. and Oct.
As long time readers of my blogs know, Happy is a Big, Black, Hairy dog who loves water. The muddier, the better.…Continue
Let's see, It's been 17 days since the last Blog.
Ok, left Russell, Kansas and RRC's Antique shop on the morning of the 14th.
Rolled into the Air Force Academy RV Park that eve.
The 15th through 17th was spent getting reaclamated to the altitude and finding my way around Colorado…Continue
Arrived at a nice RV park in downtown Independence, MO Fri eve. It was raining Fri. morning while I was hooking up the car and getting things ready to leave Scott AFB and St. Louis. Drove most of the day with very little rain falling. Then when I got to the RV Park and started to unhook and set up, it started to rain again. It would rain for a short period and stop. I would go out and start to set up and it would start again. Finely just went ahead and got wet. As soon as I finished setting…Continue
wow!!! It's been awhile. Almost three Months. We were in Georgetown, TX when I wrote "OTRA 28" in June.
A lot has happened since. However, I spent most of the summer either on the farm where I have trouble getting on the internet; or engaged in adventures that left no time for posting blogs. And, during this summer tbd seems to have lost most of it's core transferees from the old tbd to the new MyAtlantis or other social networking sites. Happy and I are now back on the road and I…Continue
Happy and I are now at Georgetown, Texas. Just North of Austin. We left Galveston on the 26th of May and moved up to Livingston, Texas. That is where the Escapees RV Club Headquarters is located. It is also where my permanent home address says I live. I needed to get the RV a new inspection sticker and I needed to get the tailgate of the Jeep repaired. What do you mean? why? Let's just say…Continue
I haven't posted travel blog for some time. I got involved with other things and I wasn't really on the road for some time after On The Road 26 1/2.
I think it is now time to catch up with what Happy and I have been doing the last few weeks.
We hung around Galveston for a few weeks after I got back from Colorado. After all, the fishing was good. The weather wasn't too hot. And the mosquitoes weren't too bad.
One of the highlights of the time there…Continue
My last blog dealt with my trip to Utah to find old friends and lost dreams of Urainium Mines.
The trip was very enjoyable and fullfilling. But, a major highlight of the trip came at the end.
My last day in Salt Lake City, Utah included meeting a dear friend from TBD.
Who? Why J. Lee S. The bard of SLC. I also met his landlady, Kim, her mother, and one of her sons.
J. Lee S. now holds the dubious honor of being the 51st TBD Member that I…Continue
We're not really on the road again, But we will be soon. I hope.
As most of you know, I went off to Utah for a week and Ms. Farquar baby sit Happy. She wrote a daily blog which is priceless. Don't expect anything that interesting here. I think Happy probably had more fun in Houston that he would have in Utah.
For the enlightenment of anyone who doesn't already know, I went to Colorado when I was 19 years old. I hoped to become a Uranium Millionaire. Two years later I called my…Continue
Happy and I are still at Tiki Tom's near Galveston, Texas. Not a whole lot has transpired since the last post on April 8th, but thought I should post so you loyal readers don't forget about us.
Happy and I both got haircuts this week. The weather is getting warmer so we now feel better. I've caught some black Drum and Redfish so that's been fun. Took Happy to the Millie Bush Bark Park in Houston on Wed. Met Pru there and we had a great time. She brought her son's nerf guns and…Continue
Sitting here at Tiki Tom's RV park on Tiki Island, Texas. Tiki Island is the last exit on South I-45 before you cross Galveston Bay from the mainland onto Galveston Island. We moved down here on March 26, 2010. The next day I got to visit UTMB ER and enjoy most of the weekend there. (see "My little medical adventure")
I had never before been to Galveston. There is a ton of stuff to do here. And lots to see. Pru has paid a visit and Monday Chris Cary and Linda Diane drove down and we…Continue
I'm sitting here waiting for time to pass. I have an appointment at the University of Texas Medical Branch in two hours.
The appointment is for a stress test. I can't eat or drink anything for 3 hours prior. Funny how easy it is to go without eating or drinking during a normal, routine day. But tell me I can't, and all at once I want to very badly.
Last Fri. night I was, as usual, sitting at my computer, merrilly typing away, while eating candy covered almonds and…Continue
Wow! It's been a while. I left Tampa, Florida on the 16 th of March. Even though my right front brake had overheated on the way into MacDill AFB, the dealer found nothing wrong during the tear down and inspection. So he cleaned it up, lubrcated the calipers and put it back together.
That evening while checking tire pressure prior to starting the trip, I discovered that one of my rear tires had deflated down to 40 psi. It should have been 100 psi. So Tue morning it was off to a tire…Continue
Today I read an editoral written by Thomas Friedman. It was titled "This country Needs a Tea Party of the Radical Center".
It was in the Houston Chronicle. Friedman is a columnist for "The New York Times".
In this column he discusses how our current form of government has been taken over by the extremists on both sides of the political spectrum. He thinks that our political system of only two major parties has allowed that, and that it is only going to get worse. The…Continue
Larry and Kittycat are back home, so I can hit the road again.
I haven't posted a OTRA blog for over a month because it has been a long, cold, miserable winter here in Florida. Just like most of the US. So not much happened. (:>)
Happy and I spent Jan. and the first three weeks of Feb. at Patrick AFB, near Melbourne, Florida. then, the last week of Feb. we moved to MacDill AFB, Florida. Near Tampa. The cold, wet, miserable weather continued until yesterday. Yesterday…Continue
My wife was originally from San Angelo, Texas. In 1984 we were living in Harpers Ferry, WV. 1984 was one of the coldest winters I have experienced in my long life. We drove from Harpers Ferry to San Angelo for Christmas that year. Our two sons were age 10 and 15. We owned and was driving a 1982 four wheel drive Subaru station wagon. I had learned earilier that the gasoline, in line filter, was located near the top of the engine compartment, close to the firewall and was subject to retaining…Continue
