Today, December 16th, is Beethoven's birthday. The old guy would have been 237 years old today.

"Our personal window on the Universe is terribly small within a stunnng range of wavelengths. With our eyes we see wavelengths between 0.00004 and 0.00008 of a centimeter (where, not so oddly, the Sun and stars emit most of their energy). The human visual spectrum from violet to red is but one octave on an imaginary electromagnetic piano with a keyboard hundreds of kilometers long."

Driving across the Banana River, Headed to Patrick AFB, Florida.
We are still at Patrick AFB, Florida. It has stopped raining. For the last couple days at least. It was in the 80s most of the weekend. Was really nice today until about 4:00 pm. Then the "Sea Fog" moved in. I was driving down A1A, the road along the Atlantic Coast of Florida that runs all the way from Jacksonville to Key West, when I noticed that something ahead of me seemed to be…

Oliver Stone describes himself as a practicing Buddhist. Specifically, he has said he follows the Tibetan branch of Buddhism. He was not born into Buddhism, but adopted the faith as an adult.
Oliver Stone's father was a Jewish American stock broker. His mother was a French Catholic. Neither of Stone's parents were particularly religious. In fact, they raised him in neither Judaism nor Catholicism. Stone was raised as an Episcopalian, and regularly attended Episcopalian church…

I have always loved animals, even when I was afraid to get close to some of them. I read everything I could as a child about how animals live their lives and their behavior. It came as no surprise to me that most animals would prefer to avoid serious physical conflict. To do this they communicate with each other in a variety of ways. I admire people that understand that communication. Wild animals often give us a number of chances before they escalate into behavior that could injure us. The…

I received phone calls today from 3 of my old trucking buddies. They got permanent lay off notices and were told to clean out their trucks, they were also told that they would be receiving a seperation packet in the mail explaining Cobra benefits. 2 of them turned 62 this year like me, so they can retire if they want, the other is only 43, he's the one I'm worried about. As far as I know, there were 2 others this week for at least 5 that were let go, the others are in their 40's…

The Great Alaskan Quitter was in town yesterday signing copies of "her book"...in other words, 300+ pages of blame and finger pointing written by some (well paid, I hope) ghost writer. This, of course, begs the question

Making the rounds of conservative talk shows lately is the question, "What has Obama accomplished so far?" The question is asked of of Obama supporters and the answers range from 'abolishing lobbyists' to 'securing world peace' to 'lowering taxes.'
One thing all answers have in common: They are all grounded in perception as opposed to reality.
Obama has accomplished the amazing feat of convincing millions of Americans that black is white, that cold is hot, that the bad…

these rambling words seeking coherence, looking for plot, and substance.... form, function... beyond easing this pain in my head that begs release... perhaps this is how all stories begin....

Albert Gutmacher was a student in my graduating class at The Central High School of Philadelphia. We graduated Central in June 1971; we were in the 230th class. We weren't friends. Not even acquaintances. It's interesting and revealing that I remember he once said he was half-Jewish. Apparently that's important to me.
His father was Jewish and his mother was Italian. We were in the same English class in 12th grade--Mr. Chester Plummer's class.
I hope Mr. Gutmacher is doing…
