Julia welcome to the group. I have found several great old friends at this site. I hope we can bring some spark back.

Sounds like a great plan, Layla. Christmas with children is always special, and staying in a motel gives Grandmom a way out when the hub-bub escalates to atomic bomb blast sound levels. :>) Also, it's nice to be around family without all the holiday detritus.

I've been going offline for extended periods lately. Being under the weather makes getting things fixed a problem; so, pardon me my absences.

While I'm online, I'll throw up a few general discussions where we can group our recipes and comments. It's always a pain when things posted on the comment wall disappear into oblivion.

Yum, Julia--sounds great. And I do love any recipe that minimizes clean up and gets your hands into it!

Pressed-Crust Pear Tart

Yield: Makes 8 servings

Ingredients
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, plus more for the pan, at room temperature
1 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for your fingers
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup sugar, plus 11/2 tablespoons
1 large egg
2 to 3 Bosc pears, peeled, halved, and cored
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 cup apricot jam
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 Whipped cream (optional)
Preparation
Special Equipment: 14-inch rectangular tart pan

Heat oven to 350° F. Butter a 14-inch rectangular tart pan and set aside.

Combine the flour and baking powder in a medium bowl and set aside.

Cream the butter and 1/2 cup sugar at high speed in the large bowl of an electric mixer. Lower speed to medium, add the egg, and beat until incorporated. Gradually add the flour mixture until fully incorporated. The dough will be very soft. Push the dough into the pan with floured fingers to form an even crust. Arrange the pear halves, top to bottom, cut-side down. Sprinkle with the cinnamon and the remaining sugar. Bake until the crust is golden brown, about 45 minutes; let cool.

Heat the apricot jam and lemon juice in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, mixing until combined. Remove from heat and brush gently over the entire tart. Serve with the whipped cream, if desired.

Tip: If you don't have a rectangular tart pan, you can use a 10-inch round tart pan. The dessert can be made up to 2 days in advance, covered, and kept in the refrigerator.

Aggie:   Dear Family, I'm not dead yet. Was hilarious.

Thanks for the comment Angharad.

My youngest daughter lives with me and my other two live in the Austin area. One of those has two children so we always go to Austin for Christmas, after all Christmas is much more special to them.

We used to stay at my son's place but I discovered that I need comfort in my older years so now we stay at the same motel every year and I can rest better.

Cold here too, but I love the cold, so I'm good. I echo your gratitude, Layla, for a source of warmth, of course. ツ

I mean to be more present here--I've just been under the weather lately. I'll add a general discussion and post some recipes today sometime.

As for how I stand with Christmas, hahaha, most of the gift buying damage is done--now it's just finishing up the wrapping, making stockings (I use real, leg length, people stockings), getting stuff boxed, and scheduling pick ups. Some boxes will go out before Christmas, some after. Some of my loved ones like to get their stockings after Christmas to prolong the festivities.

Will you be having a family/friends dinner at your home, Layla?

This Tuesday dawned friggin' cold. It was 26 degrees when I got up. Thank goodness for the furnace.
