I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.
Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.
The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.
18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.
Let me add my voice to the chorus.
"Open-minded people do not impose their beliefs on others. They just accept all of life’s perspectives and realities, doing their own thing in peace without judging anyone." ~ Everyday Mindfulness
"Having expectations of other people gets in the way of relationships. It's easier to just love the person, and let them be who they are." ~ Everyday Mindfulness
Yes, I totally agree!
"It is the present that we must protect, because it vanishes from our awareness whenever we are rushed or busy. We must give the present the space in which to exist." ~ Christophe André
"You don’t suffer because the mind is restless. You suffer because you believe it shouldn’t be. Expect the mind to be messed up, crazy, confused, and anxious... There’s nothing ‘wrong.’ It’s called being human."
~ Tiny Buddha
"Men always forget that human happiness is a disposition of mind and not a condition of circumstances." ~ John Locke
“A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot and realize how blessed you are for what you have.” ~ The Mindfulness Meditation Institute
"Everything we say at funerals should be said at birthday parties instead. We leave so much love unspoken." ~ Tiny Buddha
"Luckily, living is a team sport, and we all have it in us to provide an assist when someone’s going through rough times, even if it’s just to let them know we’re thinking of them." ~ Brad Aronson
"One of our major difficulties is that we cannot observe our feelings and thoughts without evaluation, without approving or condemning." ~ Krishnamurti
"Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, or despise, serves to defeat us in the end." ~ Henry Miller
"Situations don't make you unhappy. They may cause you physical pain, but they don't make you unhappy. Your thoughts make you unhappy. Your interpretations, the stories you tell yourself make you unhappy."
~ Eckhart Tolle
