My bosses dog has cancer in it's knee. The vet wants to amputate (tomorrow) and says in two weeks the dog will be up and running. She asked me if I knew anyone that has had a pet with 3 legs and I honestly don't. Any of ya'll know anything about this?

I have known a couple and they did absolutely fine.  They adapt quickly.  I knew a big collie like dog and a little yappy dog.  Both were happy and healthy.

Thanks crest, I'll tell her.

a friend of my has a bulldog "Dozer" he lost his front leg in a lawn mower mishap about a year ago, today,he has a prosthetic and he's doing great.

The ones I knew didn't even have prosthetics.

usually they don't need one,but being that Dozer is kind of a wide ride and weighs quite a bit,he couldn't compensate with only 3 legs.

I have seen several three legged dogs over time. They do extremely well. My only question would be. Will this cure the cancer? If it is going to come back then why put the dog through it. I had a cocker spaniel back in the nineties that had cancer in his foot the vet talked about amputation but did not recommend it. He said the cancer comes back more often than not. He recommended that we keep the dog and let him have fun and live his life until he became sicker and then to put him down. That is what we did and I think it was best in hindsight.
From what her vet said (although no promises) they caught it early and all the x-rays show it just to be there. By the way, the dog is a lab.

My daughter, out of the blue told me when she was about 13 she wanted a 3 legged dog when she grew up. LOL! At that point, she had worked with rescues for a couple years and knew of many incidences where the dog sometimes ran faster than their 4 legged counterparts. I think it was about a year after she told me this, her best friend's Black Lab got hit by a car and had her leg amputated. "SASHA"  stayed at our house for a week when they went away and you could barely keep her and MY dog out of the pool. When they weren't in the pool, they were chasing each other around the yard. That was ABOUT 3 weeks after the amputation.

Thanks ya'll.  She will be so happy to hear all this.
