I was watching Lewis and Clark ( what a wonderful documentary) on PBS, and when the expedition went over the Continental Divide there was nothing but mountains.  So they wanted to find the Shoshoneans to barter for horses to help them with the portage over land.  The Indians, out in the middle of nowhere, had dogs. I wondered where the heck they got them from, and ^^^^^^the article above explains how dogs evolve.

Cosmic!

The indians also stole Louis and Clarks Newfoundland, which they got back from them. Having had a Newfie or three myself I can understand why they spent all the time to get him back.

For a long spell the during the earlier days of communism the Russians embraced Lamarck and the theory of acquired characteristics because it suited their politics. So it was evolution but anti-Darwin. There is a good history of science book from those days that reads like a spy thriller called The Case of the Midwife Toad by Arthur Koestler. I think Brian Hare was on NPR a year or so back. Dogs contribute so much to humankind. Too bad no one every domesticated cats. :-)

I think they found a child hundreds of thousands of years older and for convenience sake and because it was a child they called it "Lucy's baby" or baby Lucy. As I recall the religious zealots also attacked Life or Post magazine when they began (don't remember which) to run articles on dinosaurs mentioning that they lived many tens of millions of years before humans. Those who insisted the Earth was only 5000 years old found it upsetting.
