I am reading Shantaram which is set in Bombay (Mumbai) India.  It tells a story about a man imprisoned in Australia, escapes, ends up in Bombay and stays ten years till he is caught by the authorities and returned to prison.  During that ten year period he established a free health clinic for the slum dwellers which I assume he financed by his counterfeiting and other illeagal activities.  After he finished his prison he returned to Bombay to write this story and reside.  Very good read so far yet it is long (935 pages).

YW, rapa...  I think you'll love it since we seem to like the same type of books.

"It took me a long time and most of the wo rld to learn what I know about l ove and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured".

This is the opening sentence to Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. This book has grabbed my attention since that first sentence.  Slopok recommended the book many, many months ago.   It is a very large book (935 pages) and I was afraid I was getting a Ken Follett type book (which books I find tedious to read).  In my humble opinion I think this is going to be an exceptional read.  I will let you know my final opinion when I finish the book.  Don't hold your breath, I take my time reading books i.e., usually only an hour a day.
