TBD on Ning

I'm sure by now you've all heard about the terrible tragic murders of 18 sweet little children and some of their teachers.  I can't imagine the fear and horror they all witnessed today.

Gun control is only going to affect the honest citizen who wants to protect himself and his family. The criminals and the over the edge people will still find something. Here in CO. we are still reeling from the Aurora theater shootings. It just came out this week that the guy in the Auroa shooting deliberalty went to a theatre that did not allow under cover guns with a permit. And Columbine is always ever present. So sad that the world is going the way it is. Did you hear about the guy in China yesterday that slashed all those little kids thought? What is going on? so sorry for all the familys are going thru. I

Something to think about, but not to turn this into a nasty political argument.

Please.... be nice if you comment.

And here's info about what Eaglewoman mentioned in her post.
Children stabbed in attack at Chinese school....
Here's something that bugs me -- the press calling this a massacre. Ok, so it WAS a massacre, but that's just so over-the-top sensationalism, in my opinion. They (the press) just have to understand that the children from that school, and others will read or hear this description and will be unnecessarily horrified. I think it would be better described as a tragedy, a shooting, or a terrible incident, just for the sake of the survivors and their families.

Steve, what really upset me yesterday was when they inteviewed this very articulate kid of about 7 or 8.  He was explaining in great detail what happened.  Why did anyone ask this child to relive this situation.  It's one thing for a therapist to get one of these children talking, but they are trained in how to do it, without inflicting more stress on this child.  I don't know why his parents allowed him to do it, but I won't judge them under these circumstances.

I agree Helen and Steve.

The media should be ashamed of themselves, they're gonna milk this story for everything thay can.

A Facebook friend posted this message this morning and let us know that we could "Share away," so here it is:

It's a surreal morning. As my kids wake up and begin their busyness today, I think I'll be a little less bothered by the noise. Many parents are waking up to a deafening silence of loss. How could I go on after something like that? I know it would be hard, because I've experienced loss close to this when Ashley died. This tragedy is not about guns, as some will say. If it were, the children in China would be alive. It is about evil. It is about a moral decline in our society. It is about our poor treatment and help solutions for the mentally ill. If someone is sick enough to do something like this, rest assured, they will do it. Whether with a gun, a knife, or some other weapon. Hug your kids more. Remember that through loss, we are reminded not to take time for granted. Be a helper. Help others in need. The true change we need in the world is not gun control. It is attitude control.

I saw it at the gym - at that point it was "gunfire and school locked down" so I hoped it wasn't too bad.  However, even over the hour I was Arc training it looked like it was getting worse by the moment.  I ended up going home rather than going to work (I work tomorrow) and obsessed about it.  As a former CPS worker I am generally sort of numb to abuse situations (it comes with the territory), but this one took me to my knees as a mother and a grandparent.

I had been out yesterday morning and when I came in the news was on, but I wasn't paying attention because I was making something to eat to be ready for my favorite soap opera.  Then one of my sons called and I had the sound off.  Then I see the news back on and notations about a school shooting.  Then I saw something about all these children being shot.  The son I was talking to has a 7 year old.  He was horrified.  I hope we never see something like this again. Unfortunately, we likely will.  We really need to get rid of all these violent movies, video games and all these damned guns.

In listening to many psychologists speak over the years, I agree with them that we need to speak out more and try to get help for a family member or friend who seems to have violent behavior or other behavior that could be related to a mental disorder, and get help and professional treatment for them.  There is such a stigma attached to someone with a mental disorder that no-one wants to speak up, or they just remain in denial.

Regarding the gun issue, one thing that could change immediately is to pass a law that guns must not be sold at a gun show without a background check.  Another thing that gun store owners could do is be more vigilant when someone comes in to purchase a gun, and even report them to the authorities if they suspect something, and DO NOT sell them a gun even if they pass a background check, although there are so many illegal guns on the street, that if someone has enough money they can get a gun.

I don't think stopping violent movies or games would help.  If a human being has mental problems a movie or video game could highten their sense of violence but they already have a serious problem that needs to be dealt with.

I do wonder why this guy's mother purchased all of these guns, seems very strange.

Thank goodness we DO have wonderful and caring teachers like the one in this very emotional video.
