TBD on Ning

I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.

Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.

The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.

18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.

Let me add my voice to the chorus.

"Just sit, breathe and pay attention to what it's like to be you. No pressure. No rules. No wrong or right. Whatever thoughts are here is fine. Body sensations are OK too. Fears, worries and sadness are welcome here as well. Sit and breathe amidst it all. What's it like to be you?"  ~  Jason Garner

Everything we do requires some sort of thought process, but sometimes I find the focus of my attention is somewhere else; some thoughts slip through, seemingly on their own.

The Tao, of course, is an ancient Asian term referring to "The Way" or "The Path", often a metaphor for enlightenment. Today I am making it a metaphor for awareness. We all sense the need to be more aware and also to be aware more often.

But the paradox here is that in a very real sense we are already aware, at all times. ???  But are we aware that we are aware? Who is it that is aware? I guess I will have to explore my awareness more deeply to answer these questions, but it seems like an infinite regression. (Who is aware of the one who is aware, etc.)

Do you ever just want to tell your mind to just "Shut Up." And yet the monkey-mind just keeps chattering away. Just pick on something in your sphere of awareness and focus on it. It can be anything and it need not be for long. Just focus long enough to break the grip of the runaway thought process.
