I am starting a new thread here mainly for purposes of my own catharsis. It is my intention, at least at this point, to make regular contributions. Of course, if anyone else has anything to add, they are more than welcome. If you have any input, please contribute.
Over a year ago I decided to deal head-on with my self-diagnosed adult attention disorder, (ADD). The inability to stay focused was becoming too stressful. I found myself sitting around watching the clock tick, yet I couldn’t keep “on task” with any project I started. Nothing was getting done and just starting something was becoming depressing.
The smart thing to do was probably to get professional help, so instead I decided to try to heal myself, at least as a first try. Cognitive therapy and pharmaceuticals (UGH) might be the approved way to go but I decided to try meditation first.
18 months and countless self-help books later, I still can’t bring myself to a regular, formal meditation program. But, along the way, I discovered informal mindfulness. Yes, I know it is the “Fad” right now. It is hard to navigate modern social trends without “tripping over” somebody extolling the benefits of mindfulness.
Let me add my voice to the chorus.
"Anyone can love a rose, but it takes a lot to love a leaf. It's ordinary to love the beautiful, but it's beautiful to love the ordinary."
-- MJ Korvan
"Remind yourself: You did not go to sleep hungry last night. You had a choice of what to wear today. You have access to clean drinking water. You have access to the internet. You can read. The secret to being grateful is no secret. You choose to be grateful, for the little things." ~ Marc and Angel Chernoff
"Reverence for life affords me my fundamental principle of morality."
~ Albert Schweitzer
"Notice the choices you make today. Are they made from habit, or from your current needs? Experiment with pausing before making decisions." ~ The Mindfulness Project
"Celebrate small victories often. Mourn failures quickly. Do what's necessary without fanfare." ~ Chris Brogan
"What if I just enjoy life for what it is right now instead of stressing about what I’ve yet to get out of it? What if I choose to enjoy this time? I know that once it goes, I won’t get it back from anywhere." ~ Tiny Buddha
“If you love someone, the greatest gift you can give them is your presence.” Thich Nhat Hanh
"Put energy into being flexible rather than wasting that energy trying to control everything." ~ Daily Zen
"Every object, every being, is a jar full of delight. Be a connoiseur, and taste with caution."
Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless when facing them. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
"Your worst enemy isn't a person or a thing. It's the story in your head that you have constructed around the person or the thing." ~ Everyday Mindfulness
“It is easier to meditate than actually do something for others. I feel that merely to meditate on compassion is to take the passive option. Our meditation should form the basis for action, for seizing the opportunity to do something.” - His Holiness the Dalai Lama
