Though there are valid medical reasons to induce, far too many are done electively for either the doctor's or the patient's convenience - and that does increase the risk of a Cesarean delivery by 50%. Though there are valid medical reasons to induce, far too many are done electively for either the doctor's or the patient's convenience - and that does increase the risk of a Cesarean delivery by 50%. Then there are also the women who don't want to labor and demand elective Cesareans! And yes, lawsuits are a factor in all this. Obstetrics is not headed in a good way. There is some effort now to again decrease the rate of Cesarean deliveries because they have discovered that several such surgeries put women at risk for a condition where the placenta grows into the wall of the uterus at the site of the old scar - a condition that causes life-threatening hemorrhage.
