Using a computer means occasionally dealing with annoying, possibly disastrous problems like losing all your data if your hard drive crashes. Here are ten of the most common computer problems and how to deal with them.

10. Your Laptop Was Lost or Stolen

When your laptop goes missing—whether you lost it or it got stolen—you’ll probably panic. Take a deep breath. If you had tracking software like free, open source Prey installed before the event, you can potentially get it back quickly or remotely wipe it. If not, you may be able to locate your laptop using Gmail or Dropbox. Or if you use Backblaze’s backup service, they can track your laptop as well. Otherwise, you can file a police report and hope for the best. To protect yourself going forward: consider these five lessons.

8. Your Computer Fan Won’t Shut Up

Though not as disastrous as the previous problems, a noisy fan is very annoying and it could be a sign something is seriously wrong—like your computer is going to overheat. If your fan is running all the time and your computer is hot, there are both cheap possible solutions (e.g., clean the dust bunnies out) and hardware upgrades you can do.

5. Windows or OS X Won’t Load Properly or Keeps Crashing

You press the power button only to be confronted with a cryptic message that your computer is having some sort of problem starting. (This is different than pressing the power button and nothing happening at all. See below.) Your first step, as with most issues, is to try to reboot and see if that fixes things. We mentioned other steps to take for OS X if you’re getting the kernel error shown above, and MacWorld offers a few other suggestions, such as booting into OS X Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility. Windows fixes are similar—try booting Windows in safe mode or performing a refresh or reset in Windows 8, as this How-To Geek article suggests. Also, if you get a specific error message when your computer starts but won’t get to the operating system, try doing a search for that exact error phrase. That could tell you if a hardware driver needs updating or what else could be causing the crash.

4. Your Computer Won’t Turn On

If your computer doesn’t even pretend to turn on, it could be for a number of reasons. Maybe your computer does start up but your monitor has issues (if you hear the fan or drive noise or your computer keyboard lights up, go three steps backward to problem #7 to troubleshoot your display). Otherwise, it could be a power issue. Check your power adapter connection or your surge protector (they’re not all created equal), and swap with another adapter if you have one to test. If you’ve upgraded your computer hardware (e.g., installed new memory), try going back to the original configuration to see if that helps. If it’s a laptop, perhaps the battery is dead (or you just didn’t actually charge it). Here’s how to tell if your laptop battery needs replacing. About.com’s PC Support offers more troubleshooting steps to consider.

3. Your Internet Connection Suddenly Sucks or Doesn’t Work at All

We’ve all been there, dealing with intermittent internet connection problems, slow internet connections, or no connection at all. How you troubleshoot will depend on the type of problem you’re having. If you can’t reach any sites at all from any of your computers or devices, try rebooting the modem. If you can’t get to specific sites, your router constantly loses connection, or only one computer on your network can’t get online, check out these troubleshooting steps. If your internet connection is just slow, however, you’ll want to check your Wi-Fi reception and other possible causes, such as your browser getting bogged down by extensions and other issues.
2. Your Hard Drive Crashed or Isn’t Working

Hard drives don’t last forever; it’s not whether a hard drive fails but when that we need to keep in mind (which is why regular computer backups are so essential). If your hard drive is now making weird noises or you can’t access it at all, you may still be able to recover your data—even if the drive is damaged or has been erased. Hook up the drive to an external enclosure and you may be able to find and copy your most important files.

1. Your Computer Has Slowed to a Crawl

What if it’s not just the internet but everything you try to do on your computer that’s suddenly gotten bogged down? This might be the most common troubleshooting complaint. Sadly, over time, all computers will slow down as they get more bloated, and hard drives can slow down as they near the end of their life. That doesn’t mean you can’t speed up and fix your sluggish computer. If you’ve ruled out viruses or other malware, some basic maintenance like cleaning up your hard drive and running some diagnostic tools can refresh your computer for a much-needed performance bump.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S.-led international operation disrupted a crime ring that infected hundreds of thousands of PCs around the globe with malicious software used for stealing banking credentials and extorting computer owners, the Justice Department said on Monday.

Authorities in nearly a dozen countries worked with private security companies to wrest control of the network of infected machines, known by the name of its master software, Gameover Zeus.

Court documents released on Monday said that between 500,000 and 1 million machines worldwide were infected with the malicious software, which was derived from the original "Zeus" trojan for stealing financial passwords that emerged in 2006.

In addition to stealing from the online accounts of businesses and consumers, the Gameover Zeus crew installed other malicious programs, including one called Cryptolocker that encrypted files and demanded payments for their release. Cryptolocker alone infected more than 234,000 machines and won $27 million in ransom payments, the Justice Department said.

The two programs together brought the gang more than $100 million, prosecutors said in court documents, including $198,000 in an unauthorized wire transfer from an unnamed Pennsylvania materials company and $750 in ransom from a police department in Massachusetts that had its investigative files encrypted. Other victims included PNC Bank [], Capital One Bank [COFCB.UL] and others, according to court documents.

“These schemes were highly sophisticated and immensely lucrative, and the cyber criminals did not make them easy to reach or disrupt,” Leslie Caldwell, who heads the Justice Department's criminal division, told a news conference.

The Gameover Zeus "botnet" - short for robot network - is the largest so far disrupted that relied on a peer-to-peer distribution method, where thousands of computers could reinfect and update each other, said Dell expert Brett Stone-Gross, who assisted the FBI.

"We took control of the bots, so they would only talk with our infrastructure," Stone-Gross said.

A civil suit in Pennsylvania helped authorities get court orders to seize parts of the infected network, and on May 7, Ukrainian authorities seized and copied Gameover Zeus command servers in Kiev and Donetsk, officials said. U.S. and other agents worked from early Friday through the weekend to seize servers around the world, freeing some 300,000 victim computers from the botnet so far.

A criminal complaint unsealed today in Nebraska, meanwhile, accused Russian Evgeniy Mikhaylovich Bogachev and others of participating in the conspiracy.

U.S. officials said Bogachev was last known to be living in the Black Sea resort town of Anapa. In an FBI affidavit filed in the Nebraska case, an agent cited online chats in which aliases associated with Bogachev claimed authorship of the original Zeus trojan, which has infected more than 13 million computers and is blamed for hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.

"That's what he claimed. There were probably a number of people involved," said Dmitri Alperovitch, co-founder of security firm CrowdStrike, which also worked with the FBI. A person familiar with the case said that Bogachev's ICQ number, which is an assigned Internet chat query identifier, matched that of the known Zeus author. Attempts to reach Bogachev were unsuccessful. FBI and Justice Department officials did not immediately respond to questions about Bogachev's alleged past role with Zeus, one of the most pernicious pieces of software ever developed. Zeus's code has since been publicly released, and many variants are still being used by gangs large and small.

"Zeus is probably the most prolific and effective piece of malware discovered since 2006," said Lance James, head of cyber-intelligence at consultancy Deloitte & Touche, which also helped authorities.

Russia does not extradite accused criminals to other countries, so Bogachev may never be arrested. He was named as part of a new policy on aggressively exposing even those the United States has little hope of catching. The recent crackdown includes the indictment of five members of China's People's Liberation Army for alleged economic espionage, which prompted denials and an angry response from Chinese authorities.

“This is the new normal,” Robert Anderson, the top FBI official in charge of combating cyber crime said at a news conference announcing the Russian action.

When asked whether Russian authorities would turn Bogachev over to the U.S., Deputy Attorney General James Cole said “as far as Russia, we are in contact with them and we’ve been having discussions with them about moving forward and about trying to get custody of Mr. Bogachev,” but declined to provide further detail of those talks. The shutdown of Gameover Zeus may not last. Other botnets have resurfaced as criminals regained at least partial control of their networks. Officials at the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency said in an "urgent warning" that users might have only two weeks to clean their computers from traces of the infection. They directed users to https://www.getsafeonline.org/nca, which was intermittently available late Monday.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security set up a website to help victims remove the malware, https://www.us-cert.gov/gameoverzeus. The European Cybercrime Centre also participated in the operation, along with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Ukraine.

Intel Corp, Microsoft Corp, security software companies F-Secure, Symantec Corp, and Trend Micro; and Carnegie Mellon University supported the operation.

1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Windows Update
3. Manually click the ‘Check for Updates’ button

or open control panel....type windows update in the little search space above and when it is found click check for updates. then follow the directives

Microsoft Abandons Windows 8.1: Take Immediate Action Or Be Cut Off Like Windows XP

Microsoft has been on a roll lately. Office for iOS (and soon Android), free Windows licenses for small devices, universal Windows and Windows Phone apps, Siri rival Cortana, even a promise to eventually return the start menu before Windows 9. But when it comes to Windows 8, it seems the company has a permanently loaded pistol aimed squarely at its feet.

So it fits that just one week on from the launch of ‘Windows 8.1 Update 1’ (the smart upgrade mouse and keyboard users have long awaited) stupidity would strike once again.

“Windows 8.1 Update is a cumulative update to Windows 8.1,” said Microsoft Senior Product Marketing Manager Ben Hunter in an apparently innocuous blog post aimed at IT professionals. Then came the clanger: “It also becomes the new servicing baseline for Windows 8.1, so next month’s security updates (on May 13th, the next ‘Patch Tuesday’) will be dependent on Windows 8.1 Update.”

In English: If you have not installed Update 1 by 13 May then Windows 8.1 will no longer receive security updates until you do. This is your 4 week countdown warning.

For many it is no big deal. Just update and be quick about it. But for anyone who chooses not to install every Microsoft update the moment it appears, like mainstream users or – let me think – most businesses around the world who have lengthy validation processes… it is another matter entirely.

So come 13 May Microsoft will issue security patches that detail flaws they are fixing and those flaws will be left unpatched for all Windows 8.1 users until they apply Update 1. A nightmare scenario. Users who stay with Windows 8.1 will face the same scenario Windows XP users are in after Microsoft cut off security updates this month, but that came a generous 13 years after XP’s initial release. Come 13 May Windows 8.1 will be just 8 months old. Major updates to previous editions of Windows (then dubbed ‘Service Packs’) also had ‘cut off’ dates for users to apply updates, but they were never so short.

Of course an argument could be made that Microsoft is merely determined to keep all its users up to date. That argument is somewhat undermined by the fact users still on Windows 8 will keep receiving security patches until January 2016. If Microsoft can keep security eligibility alive for Windows 8.0 for 8 more months because it recognises not everyone upgrades immediately, why can’t it give Windows 8.1 users more leeway than 30 days to install Update 1?

Furthermore Microsoft’s decision has terrible timing. It is announced against the backdrop of Heartbleed, a security bug which this month exposed user details on 17% of the world’s supposedly secure web servers. Heartbleed has hit headlines around the globe and made users paranoid about security. Microsoft could not see it coming, but in refusing to give Windows 8.1 users more time in its wake the company looks antagonistic.

It gets worse because Microsoft recognises Windows 8.1 Update 1 has problems. In a TechNet post Senior Microsoft Consultant Steve Thomas confirms there is “an issue regarding Windows 8.1 Update preventing interaction with WSUS 3.2 over SSL connections” and until it is fixed the deployment of Update 1 will be suspended to affected machines.

For affected users who have already downloaded Windows 8.1 Update 1 Thomas says “we recommend that you suspend deployment of this update in your organization until we release the update that resolves this issue.”

Yes, Microsoft faces a race against time entirely of its own making. It is a no win situation. Even if Microsoft issues a fix before 13 May every day spent is a day less for administrators to check for compatibility issues and apply Update 1 across all their Windows 8.1 machines.

And yet perhaps the most frustrating aspect to all of this is Windows 8.1 Update 1 is a great update. In fact it is arguably the best and most important update Windows 8 has received.

Amongst other things Update 1 intelligently boots users without touchscreens to the desktop by default and uses desktop apps by default, it reduces the sensitivity of hot corners, highlights newly installed apps and dramatically improves the Modern UI for keyboard and mouse users. It also cuts its install size in half (from 32GB to 16GB) on SSDs, runs faster on slower hardware and drops minimum memory requirements from 2GB to 1GB of RAM. The end result is a darn good operating system.

Cynics will quite rightly point out it is the OS which Microsoft should have released from day one, but nevertheless Windows 8 is now starting to realise the company’s lofty ambitions.

All of which has probably come too late. Love or loathe Windows 8, it has been a sales flop. It changed too much too soon, alienated large numbers of users and ever since Microsoft has fought to restore confidence. Windows 8.1 Update 1 looked to be the incarnation to do it, but in needlessly condemning Windows 8.1 to the same fate as 13 year old Windows XP it has all but confirmed its latest OS will never be remembered with the same fondness.
so windows 9 will be to windows 8 like windows 7 was to vista.tag:teebeedee.ning.com,2014-02-19:1991841:Topic:16681122014-02-19T04:17:28.963ZWayne Goodwinhttp://teebeedee.ning.com/profile/WayneGoodwin

Microsoft knows that Windows 8 has been very polarizing to much of its user base but it feels that it had no choice but to try to implement some kind of touch-centric OS in a world where smartphones and tablets are eating into PC sales. Neowin has spotted some comments made by Microsoft UX designer Jacob Miller, who recently took to Reddit to explain why Microsoft made a lot of the design choices it did with Windows 8, including the original decision to make the Metro UI the default boot-up screen. What emerges is a portrait of a company trying its best to please two different audiences by trying to make two completely different operating systems and stapling them together.

Miller writes that Microsoft wanted to make the Metro UI mostly for more casual computer users who were flocking to iOS and Android devices because they offered simple and intuitive platforms for basic computing tasks. For power users, Microsoft kept the more familiar desktop mode that gave them access to more of the features they were accustomed to enjoying.

“Metro is a content consumption space,” he explains. “It is designed for casual users who only want to check facebook, view some photos, and maybe post a selfie to instagram. It’s designed for your computer illiterate little sister, for grandpas who don’t know how to use that computer dofangle thingy, and for mom who just wants to look up apple pie recipes. It’s simple, clear, and does one thing (and only one thing) relatively easily. That is what Metro is. It is the antithesis of a power user.”

Miller goes on to explain that the Metro UI is actually a good thing for power users, however, because it will let Microsoft add a lot more features for them in the desktop mode while keeping the Metro screen separate for all of the computer illiterates out there.

“Before Windows 8 and Metro came along, power users and casual users – the content creators and the content consumers – had to share the same space,” he says. “It was like a rented tuxedo coat — something that somewhat fit a wide variety of people. It wasn’t tailored, because any aggressive tailoring would make it fit one person great, but would have others pulling at the buttons.”

All of this sounds nice except Microsoft seems to have simultaneously annoyed both sets of users for different reasons: Power users don’t want to have to deal with Metro UI and more casual PC users don’t understand why Microsoft took away the Start menu on the desktop mode. Miller acknowledges that there’s been a lot of dissatisfaction with many of the changes that Microsoft made with Windows 8 but he says that the company is listening very hard to user feedback and will incorporate it into Windows 9 when it releases next year. In fact, Miller explicitly says that Windows 9 will be to Windows 8 what Windows 7 was to Vista.

“Windows 7 couldn’t have existed without the lessons we learned from the mess that was vista,” he writes. “Xp couldn’t have existed without 2000. Hopefully Windows 9 will be a solid refinement on all this.”

Woe is me, one of my favorite websites (phonezoo.com) is closing up shop soon. Does anyone have recommendations for another good, free site with ready-made ringtones to download plus the ability to upload any song & tinker with it to get the exact 30-second ringtone you want?
Here are 3 sites that look like they might be okay; just wondering if you guys have heard anything about any of them: tones7.com, myxer.com, and mytinyphone.com.

Thanks for any advice.
